One of the problems I find with some space saving furniture is that I have little room to actually put it. An example of this is the freestanding Elfa tower into which sliding baskets are intended to fit. This item has been designed for kitchen storage, supposedly great for storing vegetables or dry food. Each shelf is 60cm long, with four in the pack. Four side baskets have been added as well as a tea towel hook rack. The whole concept is great, but I have a tiny galley kitchen and, with my fully fitted cabinets, I don't even have sufficient room to place a waste bin, let alone this Elfa Tower - no matter how much of a good idea it is. It is also quite expensive, I think, for what it is. If you are changing your furniture it is OK to consider new concepts and modern designs - you might like them and they may work better for you than the traditional space saving furniture you have been utilizing up to now.
However, don't be swayed by too much encouragement from the sales' staff - they are generally paid a commission per sale. You need to make up your own mind and know what will and will not fit into your home. That is the reason I mentioned the Elfa tower not being suitable for my kitchen which is very contemporary but with absolutely no spare space. This brings me to the kitchen waste bin. As I mentioned, in my kitchen there really is no space for a floor standing bin so I have had to resort to an under-the-cabinet trash can. I say resort because, in a way, I resent having valuable cupboard space being wasted on a rubbish bin - I know it's not wasted but, to me, I feel it is! Something I do like, however, and which would look good in my dining room, is the space saving table which comes complete with hideaway chairs that have been designed to slot beneath the table when not in use.
This space saving table comes as a flat pack self-assembly item which is, I must say, reflected in its economical price tag. The table itself is made of black glass, with dimensions measuring 94cm long x 79 cm wide x 77cm high. The chairs feature a contemporary design made from black resin to match the contours of the table. I like this and, while it would be no use trying to fit this table and chairs into my kitchen, it would make a lovely piece of space saving furniture for my dining room and I would certainly think of buying it for myself. Another kind of dining table that is really useful if you are considering space saving furniture is the gate-leg table. This kind of table can be stored flat against a wall and, within seconds, pulled out and the drop-leaf extension flaps lifted and secured by the gate legs beneath the table's surface. These drop-leaf designs have been around for many years and, although they have evolved to take on a more contemporary design, space saving furniture such as this has stood the test of time and proved their efficacy.

Tips on How to Choose your Furniture
The furniture in your home is indispensable for at least two very important reasons. One of them has to be the functionality of each piece of furniture that you have in your home. As true as it may be that, under very special circumstances, you could spend some time in an unfurnished home, I'm sure most of you can hardly imagine what life would be like without your bed and your nightstand, your living room sofa and your plasma TV table, or your dining room table and chairs. The other important reason is the comfortable and relaxed look and the welcoming atmosphere that the furniture in your home, together with all the other small touches, can give. Coming home to a pleasant and comfy atmosphere is what most of us need after a day of hard work. And even if we are not too beat up when we get home, this is still the place where we should feel most relaxed and comfortable, and the way we choose to decorate and furnish our homes influences that a great deal.
Your choice of furniture may depend on many factors. For instance, if the budget you allot to buying furniture is limited, then so are your options. It's true that you may find some very good deals, but it may take some time before you can find the best combination of high quality and low price, that is if you ever find it. And even so, you may not like the way it looks. If you cannot afford to buy what you like, the best advice we can give you is to wait for a while, until you can really afford to make an investment that will pay off eventually. You have so many options of furniture for your home, and some of them are the ideal combination of quality, elegance and a moderate price. But you cannot expect something that will last a lifetime to come with a measly price.
Now that the money issue is out of the way, you should focus on other criteria that you should use in your choice of furniture. The size of the each room you are about to furnish is a very important factor. You may literally fall in love with a bed that is too large for your small bedroom or with a dining table for twenty people, for which there is hardly enough room in your home. You can either draw some sketches on your own or purchase software for interior design. Either way, you have to know for sure what the available space is. This and setting the budget are two important factors that will definitely narrow your search down, because it really needs to be narrowed down, given the endless options that you have for the furniture in your home.
Deciding on the type of furniture you want for your home is as important as setting the budget and sticking to it or as determining the available space. You have to make your home comfortable at all times, and the furniture has a great role in that. For instance, a leather sofa looks great, but it can be very uncomfortable when the weather is hot if your home is not air-conditioned. If you have small children that are just discovering the environment and leaving their mark everywhere they go, you should probably opt for more practical furniture, possibly some pieces of furniture that can be easily painted and repainted, such as those made of pine. The same advice goes for those who have pets.
Above all, you should make a choice of furniture that lasts for many years to come. That way, you won't be forced to replace because it is no longer functional, sooner than you had expected, and find yourself in the very uncomfortable position of being financially unprepared for another investment in furniture. Choose your furniture in such a way so as to rule out any concerns related to its durability and reliability. Don't buy trendy furniture that you will grow tired of in a matter of months. Opt for something simple but elegant, something that is both traditional and modern. Amish furniture is all that and so much more!

Great Tips for Choosing Furniture

You’re finally going to do it! No I don’t mean tie the knot, I mean your finally
ready to buy that new furniture you’ve been dreaming about. We adorn our
bodies with fashion which makes a statement about who we are. Your furniture
does exactly the same thing for your house. It’s your fashion statement for your
home.
Here’s some helpful tips on getting the most value for your money, and choosing
furniture that will work with your home and your lifestyle. You’re friends will be
green with envy when they see your new look.
First you need to know the size of the rooms you are going to be furnishing, right
down to windows, and walls that might not work well. You can either purchase a
piece of software that will help you design a cozy room or grab a pencil and
paper and start sketching. If you have any original pieces you are keeping, then
make sure to work them into your room plan.
Once you’ve decided what would look good where, and how large of furniture
you can purchase, you need to set your budget. Decide how much money you
are willing to part with and stick to it.
Once you know how much your going to spend you’ll be able to decide on the
type of furniture. Determine the type of use the furniture will get. Are you buying
furniture for a family room or a living room? If your buying for a family room
you’re going to want to look at furniture that’s built to hold up with high use. If
your buying furniture for your living room, and it’s more of a show room then you
might look at fancier, less functional furniture.
When deciding on the type of furniture also take into consideration your lifestyle.
Do you have pets that are going to claw or chew? Do you have small children?
Is your home air conditioned? Leather is a great example of a piece of furniture
that looks good, but can be downright uncomfortable in the hot weather, unless
you have air.
Once you’ve narrowed down what you’re in the market for, make a list itemizing
each piece you’re looking for. Include sizes that will work, color preferences, all
the fine details. You’d be surprised at what you’ll forget once you walk into the
furniture store. It’s easy to get distracted because of all the choices. But with list
in hand you’ll be prepared.
Make choices that will last you for years. Don’t choose trendy furniture that you’ll
be tired of in six months. Furniture is a big investment, so keep your tastes in
check and choose furniture that will look and feel good for years to come. You
can add some trendy small ticket items such as vases or wall décor. Keep your
furniture colors easy to work with. That way you will be able to do a room face lift
just by changing out small ticket items, like pillows, ornaments, and wall art.
Once you’ve found that perfect piece of furniture, get physical with it. Check the
construction of it, watch for low quality assembly. If you buying a couch or bed,
sit on it, move around on it, see if it fits your body well. Check to see if you can
feel springs, if the buttons are attached well, if the seams are finished properly.
Don’t take any piece of furniture at face value, get underneath and check the
entire construction of it.
Once you’ve made your choices, all that’s left to do is pay and wait for delivery.
If you have old furniture in the room, it’s easier to dispose of this before the new
furniture arrives. Prep the room, so that when the delivery guys arrive they can
place the furniture where it belongs.
Stress free furniture shopping can be accomplished with just a little bit of pre-
planning. Now all that’s left to do is enjoy your new room!

Furnitures care- Cleaning Furniture Upholstery & Hardware

The furniture that we use in our homes is not made of just wood. They have upholstery and sometimes have hardware made of brass or bronze. It is these parts that enhance the beauty of the furniture and make the piece a part of the rest of the décor of the room. These parts too get dirty, gather dust and need to be cleaned regularly. Here are a few suggestions on cleaning upholstery and hardware.
The best method to remove dust from upholstery is to use a vacuum cleaner. Place a soft screen in front of the vacuum cleaner nozzle, to prevent the tip of the cleaner from damaging the material. Use the brush attachment and clean carefully.
Professional help should be taken if the upholstery is damaged or stained to a great extent.
Furniture sometimes has metal hardware as part it. The metal used is usually brass, bronze or silver. Hardware in modern furniture has a clear lacquer finish that gives them a lustrous appearance.
Hardware is sometimes coated with certain types of restorers that eliminate the need for constant polishing.
Furniture hardware often gets tarnished, as it is exposed to the atmosphere and reacts with it. In a case like this polishing the hardware can improve its appearance.
Before polishing the hardware, remove the hardware from the furniture if you can. Otherwise cover the areas around the hardware, especially the wood, with acetate sheets to prevent the polish from damaging the woodwork.
Polishing hardware while it is still on the furniture damages the area around it. This also allows the polish to get under the hardware, thus damaging both the metal and the surface around.
Clean hardware using a mixture of acetone and alcohol. Add both these ingredients in equal quantities to make a mixture. This will remove dirt and oil residue. Dip a soft bristle brush in this mixture and scrub gently. After it dries polish it with lint free cloth.
Polishing must be done in small areas at a time. After polishing remove all residue.
Follow these suggestions to clean upholstery and hardware on wooden furniture. While cleaning hardware that cannot be removed from furniture special care must be taken to ensure that no damage is done to the furniture itself.

Furniture Care-Wood

Like all things in the house you wooden furniture is subject to wear and tear over a period of time. Therefore you must take care of your wooden furniture regularly. Many times we are careless with the way we use the furniture at home. This can result in stains and scratches on the furniture. Waxes can buildup on the furniture as well. There are ways in which stains, waxes and scratches can be removed and prevented. Here are a few tips on how to do the same.
The oil from our skin and the food we eat gets on to the furniture. This oil attracts dirt, especially on parts of the furniture that we frequently touch. Using a detergent to wash of the oil and dirt can affect the finish on the furniture.
To get rid of wax use mineral spirits or naphtha as a cleaning agent. Dip a soft rag or very soft steel wool in mineral spirit and rub gently on the affected area.
Sometimes the wax that has built up on the furniture can soften the wood. If this has happened then cleaning it with spirit can leave you with bare wood.
If you feel that the finish has been damaged, the best thing to do would be to stripe the wood and refinish it.
To hide a light scratch on the furniture use padding lacquer. Take a soft cloth and fold the corners so that the center becomes a ball. Apply padding lacquer to this pad and tap on your palm to spread the lacquer through the pad. Apply the pad on the furniture in the direction of the grain. Use one smooth, gentle movement while applying lacquer. Allow the lacquer to dry and reapply if needed. Do not over do it, as you may have to redo the whole piece.
You can use polishing compounds to remove light scratches. These compounds are best used on furniture that has high gloss sheen.
If furniture with satin or dull sheen has a scratch, take soft steel wool pad and dip it in lemon oil or wool lubricant. Rub the pad on the scratch in the direction of the grain. This will work on minor scratches. You may have to rub the rest of the surface to make the sheen even. Wipe off the extra oil and apply polish you like.

Furniture Care-Furniture Tips

There are a number of things that we do not know about the furniture we use. There a number of small problems that crop up every now and then with the furniture that is regularly used. It would be simple if someone gave you a few ideas on small repairs that you can do yourself at home. Given below are a few tips on dealing with simple problems with furniture and answers to some common questions about furniture.
Be careful while buying wooden furniture. Furniture made of particleboard and medium density fiberboard is also called "solid wood". But furniture made out of these is not worth buying, as it is harder to repair and heavier than real wood. Buy furniture with signs that explicitly say solid oak wood or cherry wood or ash wood. These are safer to buy.
A number of times you want to know the kind of finish that has been used on your furniture. To find out you will have to do a solvent test. Dip cotton in some nail polish remover or acetone and rub over an area that is not easily visible. If the finish softens then the finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, which is the most popular finish in the furniture industry. If the finish softens with alcohol then the finish is shellac. If it does not soften with either acetone or alcohol then the finish is varnish, polyurethane, catalyzed lacquer etc. that cannot be dissolved by its original solvent.
If you are applying finish on your furniture then remember to account for humidity. High levels of humidity in the air will prevent the finish from drying and it will turn white or have a dull finish. If a professional is finishing your furniture then allow the piece to dry completely, for a few days before using it.
Placing any kind of potpourri directly on the furniture will damage the finish even though it is kept in cloth or plastic bag.
If metal bed frames are squeaking then just apply oil to the rivets and this will stop it from squeaking. If a bed made out of wood squeaks, it means it is getting loose and needs re-gluing.
In a drawer wood moves against wood and certain parts need to be lubricated. If drawers stick rub some paste wax on the drawer and the wood that it rides on. If this does not work then the drawer needs some repair or is very worn out.
Glass tabletops actually protect the wooden tables. Do not allow moisture get trapped between the glass and the wood. Raise the glass tabletop with rubber bumpers, this will allow airspace and let the wood breath.
Before using wooden screws rub a little candle or bee's wax or soap on the screw threads and it will move more smoothly.

Furniture for bathing
Bathroom is very important room in the house. So, it is not necessary to restrain or deprive it. Today we have decided not only to start talking, but also to tell in detail about, how it is necessary to arrange bathroom so that it did not look poor or boring.
The washstand runs out…
It is clear, that the first question, which will be set to us by the reader, is where to place furniture for bathing. But in fact it happens different and it is good, if in your bathroom the small armchair can be located, but usually you can easily place washing machine.
However, manufacturers of sets have provided such “a trifle” as small-sized bathrooms and can offer furniture for a bathroom.
So, let’s talk about bathing furniture. Usually it is the complete set from lockers of the various sizes and designs from the most unpretentious, floor, up to original design of cases.
The most minimal complete set includes so-called “washstand” and one hinged case or a mirror with shelve. Well, depending on the sizes of a premise it is possible to choose various quantities of subjects.

All furniture for bathing is conditionally divided into three categories - floor, wall and combined team. The first group includes washstands, which are established directly on a floor; instead of fasten on a wall.
If you have decided to do without a locker under a bowl, table-top may be wonderful alternative to it. It is necessary to approach to its choice with mind and to remember, that no matter, how beautiful it was, the practicality in this case is more important. In case of table-top, it should be very wear proof. Usually table-tops are made of natural tree (oak or a pine), MDF or plastic. Besides, table-tops can be monolithic, for example, they may be made of strong glass or artificial stone. They are very expensive and require special care.
Surface of table-top (tree or MDF) is usually processed by several layers of first coat and enamel, which is not afraid of scratches and water. By the way the guarantee on furniture for bathing makes at least 10 years and serves much longer. But, despite of such safety measures and water resistance, especially to hot water, it is necessary to be very accurate with table-tops.
As a rule, metal hand-rail-hangers for towels are located of edges table-top, and the bottom is equipped by several cases for different trifles.

How to Choose Suitable Furniture for yourself
In order to choose a suitable furniture for your `Lovely home` the pieces of furniture should always work well according to the spacious outlook of small or large room. The capacity of the room must always come up with enough storage shelves and capacity and should efficiently be `Mobile` to move upon. `Versatility` or adjustments made for the arrival of the furniture into the home projects the nature and demand of a specific individual to make `Furniture` as the noble custom of his home tradition and appreciation from the arrivals (visitors/Guests) in day-to-day lives and for further implicating more changes in the future with adjustments done to acquire `Furniture items` in other forms and quality so that exact or final result be achieved out of different colors, patterns, shape and design.
The different tips on choosing Furniture is as follows:
1. Availability of small furniture accessories for small house do wonders as small houses lack sufficient space or aren’t spacious/Roomy from inside in order to house as many items if possible therefore, they fit remarkably well with confined spaces of the room and are `Mobile` by nature to be dragged easily from one place to another.
2. Acute shortage of `Storage` is found upon in the entryway from the door or inside the corners of the room. Select furniture drawers or hanging space like for ex: chest of drawers or an armoire (cabinets). One can install it in a bedroom, foyer, living room and mudroom.

3. Furnishing up of a living room (Dining Hall) may include `Latest fashioned` loveseats than a `traditional sofa`. As they are `Mobile` in nature they usually forms a corner seating area of the hall and might consists of an opposite conversation spot arrangement in an hall or individually in many other rooms of house. Decorative items are always handy such as lamps, vases, cushioned chairs, and pillows with matching mattresses in pairs. They call upon a form of continuity to a room premise with a subtle touch of expertise of furniture management.
4. A soft and pleasing natural/neutral color such as tan, camel, navy, dark green or black are used as upholstered furniture pieces. These colors are named as "anchor" colors. Durability of fabric of the furniture is the key to enhance the color contrast from the surface of the item automatically as it gives softness to the ambience of living.
Harmonizing a specific anchor color demands perfection of the background of the room.
Seasonal changes of the furniture provide a fresh paint smell throughout the year. For ex: On a green loveseat you might choose yellow floral pillows for summer and camel tapestry pillows for fall winter season. Slipcovers can be used to change the outlook matching with the `Furniture`!
5. Creativity with tables: Try to choose interesting base and plate glass for the top of the table or have a side table (round or rectangular) of plywood and then cover with an under cloth (for softness) and a decorative tablecloth of coordinating fabric as well . It can be used in a living room or as nightstands by a bed. A classy touch of furniture matching.
6. Color scheme: Selecting an anchor color and complimenting the same with the `Color scheme` is every person’s desire. Complimenting a color with mobility to bring different colors to different areas of the house is easy and indeed! Suits the taste and demand fulfillment of matching them one by one.
7. Built-in storage closets are meant for those who demand extra storage shelves or cabinets in a side corner of the hall or room such as a coffee table with drawers or a cabinet at the entryway instead of an open table at any corner of the room. You'll be amazed what a difference just one drawer or shelf makes to that closet.
8. Arranging furniture: Thinking outside the box: Use furniture or accessories in unexpected ways, such as a loveseat at the end of a bed, a TV hidden away under a tablecloth, or a big dresser that holds video tapes in bulk.

Furniture Placement Guidelines
Now that we are progressing well into the field of decorating, and have a solid grasp on getting a design brief, brainstorming for a style, using color well, making fabrics work for you and what to look for in home finishes, we will look at how to place the furniture into you cleverly decorated room. The furniture placement will further enhance all your good work you have done so far.
I will show you how to place your furniture by telling you what not to do!!
The most common error in furniture placement is to place all the
pieces around the walls, thinking that it will make the room look
larger. Unfortunately this theory is incorrect, and it does exactly
the opposite, it makes the room feel smaller and is less usable.

The next error is to group all the furniture around a focal piece, half right, except it is the television! Neglecting other features like a fireplace or a spectacular view.
A popular error for hoarders is to have so much furniture that they
have to stuff it all into one space, less is best when it comes to design, we don't want to go back to the Victorian style of decorating.
This isn't really a placement error, rather a purchasing, make sure
that the furniture is in proportion to the size of a room. A huge chunky sofa may be comfy, but if is the only thing that fits into the room, then it definitely is not in proportion. The same can be said for the heights of furniture, if you have a high stud then the space will look bigger automatically and you can have taller and more solid furniture. The other area here is that a large sofa and a small spindly side table will also look out of proportion, so think about how furniture will work together when you are purchasing or deciding which furniture to keep in your room if you are a hoarder!
So how do we go about making these spaces work?
Small Steps
Decide what you are going to do in the space, ie read, watch tv, sleep, exercise, relax, converse, play.
Then work out what you need to achieve these tasks. (do this for every room) For example the living room - the most difficult as it has to be very flexible to accommodate a whole family. You will need to allow furniture for watching TV - sofas, chairs and coffee table or side tables (to hold the remote controls obviously!), chairs, playing computer games - desk, office chairs, reading quietly - armchair with accompanying side table and lamp, play are for the small children - bean bags, cushions, toy chest, bookshelf. Do you start to see what we are trying to achieve?
Next step - if you can draught, you can plan out on paper how you
are going to fit all this furniture in, remembering to look at where people come and go from the room, you don't want them walking in front of the television every time they need to leave the room, orientate the furniture in another direction. If you can't draught, don't worry, good old graph paper will do, measure the size of the room, layout out the overall space on the paper, then measure the furniture and on another piece of graph paper, measure and draw using the graph paper to help you, a rough shape of the furniture, then cut them out and you can start placing them in the room. This is much easier than literally pushing the furniture around the room yourself. This way you can explore the numerous options until you feel that the space works.
Some tips:
Group sofas, chairs parallel to each other if you are wanting people to converse, in general keep you furniture parallel to the walls, this is the most pleasing on the eye. You can get away with angling a chair in a corner but apart from that parallel to the walls is best.
Define a specific area with a change in floor coverings, ie a rug under a dinging table, under a sofa and chairs, or as a way to protect your carpet and define where the children play in an area.
Keep all your electrical equipment in one area, TVs, Stereo, Video,
DVD etc, this way it reduces the cables lying around on the floor,
if possible use an entertainment unit and it can also store all your cds, dvds and videos out of sight, this makes a huge difference in a living room. If you are able, get your speakers wired into the walls and ceiling, this way you won't have to see them on the walls or on the floor.
Think about how you want to create the mood in the room, lighting
is where I'm going here. It is great to have your general lighting from the light switch, but to create different moods and effects, don't overlook the power of lamps, there are so many types available now that there is no excuse not to be able to find some to suit your scheme, some are sculptural, some are slim and almost invisible, others have the traditional lamp base and shade.
What they all do is create an extra zing to the room, and this will
show off all the hard work you have done.
Where do you place them? Tall up light lamps look best in corners as
they make the room look larger, small lamps work best on side tables next to chairs or sofas, as they provide light for you to read or do handiwork with, sculptural lamps can become a focal point, so they can go anywhere.
Focal points, I think I have overlooked explaining this and it is very important for furniture placement. Every room should have a focal point, this is how we succeed in decorating and design. We have something attractive that immediately draws the eye into the room and makes you want to be there. Some people are lucky and have an ever changing view from a window that does this naturally, but most of us have to work at it.
The most common ways to achieve a focal point is with the use of a
piece of artwork be it sculptural or a painting. Other ways include
a large decorative mirror, a fireplace, using a change in wall color with a feature wall, using a change in texture with a wallpaper or fabric to draw your eye. Sometimes a piece of furniture or a rug can be a focal point, but they aren't usually as obvious because you eye has to look down to see these, the best place for a focal point is at eye level. Don't forget to highlight the focal point with lighting.
Use these guidelines to work with the other rooms in the house.
